A Message from Michael Timm

You may have noticed there’s a NEW TAB up there alongside “home” and “archives.” It’s called Alchemy for Writers 101;-)and it’s the newest thing going on in the Project Empty Space world. To explain a little about how it got started, the P.E.S. team asked Michael Timm to write a little introduction:Image
Alchemy for Writers 101;-) is an afternoon by writers, for writers.
Organized by the Bay View Writers Group in cooperation with Project Empty Space, the goal of the first event is to connect local writers with each other and with resources to advance the local writing scene.
Professional writers and editors will present mini-seminars to share practical knowledge and inspire participants to work meaningfully toward their goals. Speakers are seeking to engage participants, so those who come prepared to engage with questions will create a richer experience for everyone. The program is being designed to be a comfortable and informal afternoon, with quick sessions covering a breadth of content.
Why should you block out your Sunday afternoon?
If you have a story to tell but aren’t sure how to start or where to look for guidance;
If you are or are interested in being a freelance writer but don’t have much experience;
If you are a writer by trade looking to discover local connections, markets, or clients;
If you have always dreamed of writing stories for magazines but never believed you could do it;
If you are new to Milwaukee, haven’t discovered a writing community, or don’t feel that one exists;
If you are interested in pursuing writing as a vocation or avocation and are hungry for resources;
If you prefer an informal, comfortable setting to a staid conference or workshop;
If you are an out-of-work English major wondering what to do next with your life;
then Alchemy for Writers 101;-) has something to offer you.
The formal agenda is TBD but will include sections on travel and food writing, freelancing, book proposals, proofreading and copyediting, fiction, and how to get started. Check back soon for an updated list of event speakers.
The Bay View Writers Group started meeting biweekly in the early 2000s as a critique and support group for local writers. Many of the faces have changed since those early days but the spirit of dedicated critique and support has, if anything, grown stronger. Members include a healthy mix of writers who are serious about writing as a creative and commercial pursuit. Due to its intimate size of seven to 10 members, the group is open by invitation only, but recent discussions about the Milwaukee literary scene—or perceived lack thereof—inspired the Bay View Writers to put their feet forward in a humble attempt to build up that scene and further connect Milwaukee writers. The initial result is the first Alchemy for Writers 101;-) event. Based on feedback from the free July 15 event, the Bay View Writers Group plans a second event to add more value to the Milwaukee writing community.
